Wondering what the difference is between updates, patches, and upgrades?

  • An anti-virus update is a new Dat or SuperDat file for your anti-virus software. Updates are issued weekly to keep you protected from new threats. SuperDats include Dat updates and Engine updates. Anti-virus updates are automatically downloaded and applied (by default) from the 'Instant Updater' in the latest versions of McAfee software, or manually downloaded if you have changed settings for Instant Updater.

  • A patch is moving from one decimal point release to the next. Patches are issued as needed to fix software bugs and incompatibities with new products. Instant Updater automatically notifies you of the availability of patches (or they can be manually downloaded if you changed the settings for Instant Updater). Example: McAfee VirusScan v7.0 to McAfee VirusScan v7.01.

  • An upgrade is when you move from one version of a McAfee product to the next.
For example: upgrading from McAfee VirusScan v6.0 to v7.0. Learn more about Upgrades.
