• | Understanding content categories in Parental Controls Content categories define the types of content found on websites and online activities. You can allow or block content categories in Parental Controls to restrict what your child can see and do online. |
• | Setting up Parental Controls Before you can protect your children, you must create an administrator. The administrator is responsible for choosing protection settings for each child in the household, and for creating a password. To create an administrator password, you must log in to Windows using an Administrator or Limited user account. Protection settings let you decide what your child can see and do online, and the password ensures that only you can make changes to those settings. To change a setting, you must first enter the administrator password. After you protect a child with Parental Controls, you can change or remove the user's protection settings at any time. |
• | Assigning an age group Parental Controls blocks or allows websites and online activities based on the age group a child belongs to. Activities you might want to control include instant messaging and online games. Content categories define the types of content found on websites and online activities. By assigning your children to an age group, you control which sites they can access and which online activities they participate in. |
• | Using safe searching Some search engines, like Google, Microsoft Bing, and Yahoo!, offer safe searching — a setting that stops potentially inappropriate content or links from showing up in a user's list of search results. These search engines usually let you choose how restrictive you want the safe searching filter to be, but also let you or any other user turn off safe searching at any time. With Parental Controls, safe searching is turned on by default for every user. |
• | Allowing and blocking websites If you want to control your child's access to a specific website, you can add its web address or IP address to the filter list and set the permission level to Allow or Block. |
• | Limiting time spent online By default, all users can go online whenever they want. If you're worried that your child is spending too much time online, you can control access and set time limits. |
• | Viewing the Parental Controls report You can view a report to see whether a child protected with Parental Controls tried to visit blocked websites or attempted to go online during a restricted time. |
